Endless Emptiness

Reflective Holographical Interface

Endless Emptiness is an art installation inspired by the concept of “karma,” using the Chinese character Kong (Emptiness) to symbolize the cyclical nature of existence—where everything comes and goes, never lingering. The installation projects the character for “emptiness,” along with translations in other languages, onto steam, creating a holographic visual effect.

Steam flows through a bronze pipe structure that forms a sculptural representation of Kong, blending the tangible with the intangible. The pipes provide a physical framework, while the steam and projected light create an ethereal, hybrid interface. This interplay between solid form and fleeting projection transforms the abstract into a visually striking, immersive holographical experience, bridging material and immaterial worlds.

The sculpture features a series of interconnected metal pipes that serve as both the structural framework and the conduits for hot steam. The choice of metal was intentional due to its ability to withstand high pressure and temperature. As the steam flows through the pipes, it creates a dynamic, canvas-like surface of solid steam, blurring the boundaries between structure and material expression.

The installation’s structure embodies a “double-meaning” design, inspired by two different ways of writing the Chinese character “空” (Kong). From the front view and side view, the form reveals distinct interpretations of the character, encouraging viewers to explore the space from multiple perspectives. This interplay of form and meaning is further enhanced by projected visuals, prompting the audience to move around the installation, actively engaging with its shifting visual and conceptual narrative.

Once the steam flows through the sculpture, it forms a dynamic, steam-based canvas. This surface serves as a projection medium for a set of animations, which appear to float in mid-air, creating a holographic visual effect. The interplay between light, steam, and motion blurs the boundaries between physical form and immaterial imagery, immersing viewers in a surreal, ever-shifting visual experience.
